The impressive artistic development of Buxton, an exceptional artist based in Derbyshire, is, in our opinion at least, squarely attributable to an appalling car crash he was involved in a few years ago. He admits that, since the accident in 2004 that came within an inch of taking his life, he has been forced to re-evaluate his priorities. But it is clear that he is evaluating much more than that.
His extraordinary landscapes seem to work as as a form of catharsis, surging with darkness as they depict the power of the natural world. Often, his paintings convey a sense of inevitability, as though he recognises that you can't hide from the pending storm. It's as if each moment that passes since his near-fatal road-traffic accident somehow brings him closer to understanding the ramifications of what could have happened on that day. He sees the fragility of existence and then seems to revel in it. Buxton is having a sonorous and surprisingly candid conversation with mortality, perhaps in a way that only someone who has come so close to it can.
"Buxton's extraordinary work is becoming more visceral and more obsessed with the physical. It's as if each moment that passes since his near-fatal road traffic accident somehow brings him closer to understanding the ramifications of what could have happened on that day. He sees the fragility of existence and then seems to revel in it."
Buxton's work is shown all over the UK now and is increasingly popular with collectors. We are proud to have worked with him for the last four years of his career and look forward to many more.
